We signed up to abolish courts that serve multinational corporations.

On 22 January, a Europe-wide campaign started to collect signatures to put an end to secret and exclusive tribunals for multinationals known as ISDS. These mechanisms are included in trade and investment treaties such as TTIP or CETA. The campaign in turn calls for the need to establish binding international (and national) standards to hold transnationals accountable for human rights violations.

The multinationals have their own court system at the international level.

This system allows large transnational corporations to sue states before private international tribunals for changes or new legislation that go against the commercial benefits of investors. On the other hand, the people and communities affected by violations of the Human Rights committed by transnationals do not gain access to justice. This is a clearly unjust situation that should be eliminated.

The Spanish State is currently the one that accumulates the most claims through these mechanisms, which will most likely result in the loss of billions of euros of public funds for the payment of compensation to investors: private investment funds or transnational corporations.

We need new rules to hold corporations accountable, and to balance power asymmetries by putting people and the planet back in the driver's seat.
